Benin is a small West African nation bordering the Atlantic Ocean with Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso and Togo to the north and Togo to the West. With a total land area of over 112,00 square kilometers, Benin ranks as the 102nd largest nation in the world and is slightly smaller than the state of Pennsylvania. It boasts only 121 kilometers of coastline but its economy relies heavily on small offshore oil deposits.

People of Benin

The people of Benin are referred to as Beninese. The primary ethnic group is Fon, with nearly 40% of the population among this ethnicity. Lesser-populous ethnic groups include Adja (over 15%), Yoruba (12%), Bariba(9%), Peulh (7%), Ottamari (6%), Yoa-Lokpa (4%), Dendi (2.5%), and other, including Europeans (2%). French is Benin’s official language with Fon and Yoruba being the most common vernaculars in the south as well as at least six major tribal languages in the north of the country. Catholic is the predominant religion with over 27% of the people claiming it along with Muslim (24%), Vodoun (Voodoo) 17%, Protestant 10% and other Christian 5.3%. According to the 2013 Yearbook of Jehovah’s Witnesses, there are over 11,000 of its practicing members in Benin. The practice of Voodoo is alleged to trap many Beninese in fear, poverty and crime.

Population of Benin

According to a 2013 estimate by the CIA, Benin has a population of over 9,877,000 people. AIDS has had a major impact on mortality and leads to lower-than-expected life expectancy and higher infant mortality rates. Despite this fact, Benin has a positive population growth rate of nearly 3%. The last official census completed in Benin was in the year 2002.
